The garden opens for charity as part of the 'Yellow Book' Scheme (www.ngs.org.uk) Exhibitions, demonstrations and events are held during the open days.

Tan-y-Llyn is a three and a half acre garden set in small hills above the Vyrnwy Valley in Mid Wales. Work started on the garden fourteen years ago. It is fairly high at 550 ft but the site slopes south and is relatively sheltered. In fact almost all of the garden is on a slope and this has been a major factor in its design.

We are surrounded by small hills, fields, woods and plantations. The aim has been to design a garden which slips quietly into the landscape by borrowing views, blurring the transition between garden and wider landscape and by following the contours for paths and borders.

Nearest the house is a large

collection of plants in containers, a raised herb garden and scree bed. Informal mixed borders give way to a thorn grove and pond. Short, rabbit grazed grass gives way to meadow and buttercup. Furthest from the house is an orchard and wilderness framed by forest.

In addition to the NGS charities above, the 2008 openings will support Healthy Living Centres, Montgomeryshire

The garden has been made from simple materials: wood, gravel, grass, hedges and woven willow. The structure too is simple: soil has been cut to form paths, hedges cut to form new shapes; grass is mown at different heights and portholes cut for views.

The gravelled herb area becomes an attractive tea garden on open days. Home made cakes pastries and sandwiches with a variety of teas, coffees and juices make a popular menu. The nursery is also open selling herbs, alpines and perennials.
