Herbs

All our plants are propagated on the nursery from our own stock plants. The list below outlines what we grow over the year: evergreen plants like rosemary and thyme are available all the time whilst annuals and less hardy herbs are available in spring and summer. Please ring or e mail if you want to know if we have a particular plant.

Agastache rugosa Korean mint, strong peppermint flavour for teas or salads.

Allium schoenoprasum Chives, purple flower heads are also edible.

Allium tuberosum Garlic chives, flat garlicky leaf, ornamental white fragrant star-like flowers late in the year.

Allium fistulosum Welsh onion, perennial leaves all through winter if snails allow.

Aloysia triphylla (Strongly) lemon scented verbena, over winter under glass.

Angellica archangellica Short lived impressively large perennial with globular flower heads in second year, or crystallise stems for cake decoration.

Anthemis nobilis Chamomile

Anthemis Treneague Lawn chamomile – runners form a fairly dense fragrant sward for seats lawns or paving. No flowers.

Artemisia abrotanum Southernwood, Old Man, grey green hair like leaves on gaunt upright stems.Strongly aromatic.

Artemisia absinthium Wormwood, erect aromatic perennial, finely divided flat silky silvery leaves. Moth repellant properties do not apply to aphids.

Artemisia French Tarragon Mildly creeping stems, richly aniseed flavoured leaves. Not as hardy as Russian tarragon but infinately superior flavour.

Asparagus Connover’s Colossal (AGM)

Calamintha nepeta Lesser calamint, aromatic foliage and two-lipped mauve flowers on a branched flowerhead.

Chrysanthemum parthenium Aureum Golden feverfew, a cheerful self seeder.

Cynara cardunculus Cardoon, stately 'artichoke' in silver and purple

Dianthus caryophyllus clove pink

Foeniculum vulgare Purpureum Bronze fennel. Tall perennial with finely divided aniseed flavoured bronze foliage and flat umbels of yellow flowers.

Foeniculum vulgare Green fennel

Fragaria vesca Alpine strawberry/ wild strawberry, small fragrant fruit throughout the summer.

Helichrysum angustifolium Curry plant. Silver foliage strongly aromatic in hot weather.

Hyssopus Blue Hyssop. Evergreen aromatic sub-shrub.

Laurus nobilis Aureus Golden form of sweet bay, look ill at ease in summer but glows brightly and cheerfully in winter.

Laurus nobilis Sweet bay, aromatic, useful and ornamental. Clip into pyramids and balls or grow freely, yellow flowers in winter.

Lavandula Hidcote strain Dwarf habit, silvery foliage,violet flowers.

Lavandula lanata large silver wooly leaves and dark flowers very fragrant, fron Southern Spain, frost intolerant.

Lavandula Munstead strain Dwarf habit lavender flowers.

Lavandula stoechas French lavender. Long flower stalks and 'ears'. Strongly camphoraceous scent to the leaves. Long flowering period, but dislikes very cold wet winters.

Lavandula stoechas leucantha White form of French lavender, bulbous flower head and short ‘ears’. Second flush of flowering late in year. Hardy to -5ºC.

Lavandula angustifolia Dutch Group Classic garden lavender, robust and hardy.

Levisticum Lovage. Tall umbellifer; leaves fresh or cooked, give a air of celery. Brings height to the the herb garden and tolerates some shade.

Melissa balm- green and variegated. Cut regularly for brightest foliage.("Drawing neere in smell and savour unto a Citron":Gerard)

Mentha applemint Hairy leaves but excellent fresh flavour- good in cold drinks.

Mentha basil mint A hint of basil or cologne.

Mentha Bowles' mint Somewhere between applemint and spearmint.

Mentha Brundall mint A finely flavoured form of spearmint

Mentha Crispum Wavy leaved spearmint.

Mentha ginger mint Yellow and gold variegation

Mentha pennyroyal Penny Royal

Mentha pineapple mint Cream and green variegations.

Mentha requienii Corsican Mint. Prostrate, tiny leaves and flowers. Pungent aroma.

Mentha silver mint Silver form of horsemint reminiscent of a Buddleia.

Myrrhis odorata Sweet Cicely. Handsome, finely divided and sweet aniseed flavour.
